Lanzarote is a volcanic island belonging to the Canary Islands, an archipelago and autonomous community of Spain. The group of islands are just 60 miles west of Morocco and face northwest Africa in the Atlantic Ocean.

This special trip is a journey that will take you to the key emblematic places of the island, which have been touched by the hand of the famed artist and architect Cesar Manrique (1919-1992). Manrique had a major influence on the planning and development of Lanzarote, noted in the use of boutique low rise hotels which honor the breathtaking landscapes native to the island.

We will experience the energetic vortexes that help create the magical and beautiful sensations evoked by Lanzarote. A dedicated Yoga practice will be held daily with the 500 RYT certified Erin Fabian, as well as meditation and Restorative Yoga with Anais Conde. We will engage in the art of painting and drawing with the acclaimed plastic artist Rufina Santana and her husband, Paco Curbelo, at the Art Centre, located in San Bartolome, and visit the charming nearby town of Teguise. Additionally, we will journey to most enchanted places throughout the island:

  • “La Montana del Fuego” (Mountain of Fire)
  • El Jardin del Cactus (“Cactus Garden”)
  • “Los Jameos del Agua”
  • Cesar Manrique Foundation
  • Winery Visit

Even more surprises await, such as an immersion into the beautiful waters of Famara beach, hiking through the remnants of volcanic areas, tastes of the best cheese made from the milk of the “yogi goats” and “gofio,” a delicious type of organic grain utilized by the native people as nourishment. We will also have encounters with nature, and the local art scene. This is your adventure to journey inside by discovering new places.

RUFINA SANTANA, THE ARTIST & the HOSTESS

Rufina Santana is an Artist with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona. She resides in the Canary Islands, Spain and has expanded her artwork abroad, traveling internationally and acquiring external influences which has contributed notably in the development of her work. Throughout her fruitful career, she has participated in numerous artistic and literary courses and workshops; one of the most noteworthy being with the acclaimed painters Lucio Muñoz and Rafael Canogar. In 1990, Rufina created an interesting lecture entitled “Alphabet for an Island“, which constitutes the beginning of her reflection on the nature of the primitive garden.

Approximately ten years later, she further developed this concept resulting in the collective project “Hesperides: The Inner Garden” (2001) and in the solo exhibitions “Archeology of the Garden” and “Cartographies of the Garden“,projects exhibited in Art Centers of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Senegal, France and Japan. She advances one more step in that meditative idea, creating a geography of paradises lost in the memory through a group of paintings and sculptural pieces where the symbolic vegetable element is predominant.

Fascinated by these elements of Art and Nature, she creates “Jardin de dos Orillas(Garden of two shores), a project which celebrates Life and Art together with Dr. Maasaki Hatsumi, a Japanese artist who has received important awards such as “Living Treasure”, where he keeps and guards his cultural traditions.  During this period, she establishes links that give rise to a dialogue and the creation of singular works with marked Oriental influence.

Another idea deeply rooted in her work is Myth and the Greco-Latin tradition, a place of special relevance in the connections between Europe and the rest of the world. The island, that microcosm of ideal paradise, is at once a place surrounded by an uncertain sea, attracting new cultures and traditions that enrich both the islanders as well as the travelers.

In the materialization of this idea, two other great projects are generated: “Oceanicos Azules” (Oceanic Blue, 2007) located in the Hotel Balneario Blancafort in Barcelona and “Cartografías del Agua” (Water Cartographies). In this case, Santana displays her mastery and her reflection on water-related myths, with works of great format dominated by blue. “El Viaje del Heroe” (The Journey of the Hero), was a more recent project made for the Exhibition “Cartografías del Agua”, held at the Frost Art Museum in Miami in 2015.

Another significant project about the landscape of the Canary Islands is “Canarias, Paisaje Intimo” (Canarias, Intimate Landscape, 2010-2011). This project was sponsored by the government of the Canary Islands, in which she develops a great series of paintings about the varying landscapes of all the islands with an important use of color and a technique converging figurative and abstract styles.

In a complementary way, Santana has also done numerous solo exhibitions and has participated in international art fairs leading her to expand her work in Spain, Germany, France, Switzerland, England, the United States, and Japan.

The theoretical basis of her work, her technical knowledge and the experience gained during more than thirty years of professional practice, has given her the opportunity to lecture and teach courses at the Universities of Barcelona, Florida, and Boston, as well as other private counseling courses for professional artists as well as amateur artists looking to deepen their knowledge. In addition to holding several editions of catalogs, books illustrations in “Book of the Artist” “Art and Objects of Art,” she is also the founder of the “Escuela del Sol” (School of the Sun), a multidisciplinary experience for the dissemination of Art, Science and Spirituality.

Rufina Santana currently resides between Madrid and the island of Lanzarote, where she has her workshop next to the sculptor Francisco Curbelo, and in which she develops her artistic and pedagogical works. A tireless traveler, she will continue to explore special places that can offer her answers to the questions posed by her Art.

ANAIS CONDE, co-HOSTESS, ART LOVER & YOGI

Since I was a child, I always had the desire to discover unfamiliar places and by doing so, learn something about myself. I had a happy childhood, followed by more introverted and studious teenage years.

I did not know what exactly to do, but I wanted to be able to sustain myself economically. This led me to study business and economics at the University of Deusto, in Bilbao, Spain. I achieved a Master’s degree equivalent and was lucky enough to gain a scholarship at the University of Edinburgh, where I experienced some of the most beautiful and exciting moments in my life up until that point.

I interacted with individuals who taught me about art, music, and urban architecture. I was thereby exposed to an amazing world of culture that I had never seen before. I had the opportunity to visit museums and found all those painted faces, landscapes, and incredible images intriguing. They all formed a story and had the ability to transport me to another world. I could say that it was there when I fell in love with art, which has become a lifelong appreciation. Nevertheless, it took me many years before I really decided to start working in this field.

Of course, during those years there are other stories and experiences that have coalesced to make me the person I am today.

I worked for over 15 years in the corporate world and was very fortunate to combine my experience in International Trade and Commerce with my passion for travelling. During those years, I travelled to more than 60 countries around the world discovering unique people and beautiful places on this planet.

In the last few years, I went into a more introspective journey of myself, exploring and acquiring knowledge in holistic therapies such as Reiki, “Bioneuroemotion”, and yoga philosophy and practice. I am still developing myself in these new alternative therapies to help, serve and elevate consciousness in order to co-create a better world.

I hope that you can join us on this magical and unforgettable experience in Lanzarote!

ART CENTER

“My name is Rufina Santana, I am a painter, I am also the founder of “Volcanic Creativity,” a program for the dissemination of Art, Science, and Spirituality. Art is my great passion, as I am always in the pursuit of Beauty and Harmony. I have developed my artistic skills in each new project and I have been fortunate to exhibit in Germany, Japan, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, and the United States.

When I become obsessed and immersed in a subject, I begin to draw and paint it without rest. I always have four verbs present in my life (actions): Know, Bear, Love and work in Silence. With a spirit of service, I am interested in generating value for my community and for collectors, many of whom have become followers and contributors in my work. Luckily, I am easily understood as I belong to a family of artists. My husband, Paco Curbelo, is a sculptor, and my son Néstor (HUGU), is a designer and illustrator. Together we have created an intercultural meeting place in our house-workshop in Lanzarote, where we have also developed a whole lifestyle. I encourage everyone to explore this unique world as well as discovering your most artistic side! It is extremely fulfilling to help others develop their talents in a different and creative way!   Celebrating Life and Art: Rufina Santana.
